The Food and Drugs Board through its routine monitoring activities found that a company by name Sucatrade Limited located in Tema, Community One, had unwholesome chicken parts stored in its Bulk Cold Storage Facility.

Inspection of the said consignment showed the lumping together of chicken parts and torn cartons in a caked form, packed directly on the bare floor and against the walls of the cold room in two large heaps. The storage of the said chicken parts under such unhygienic conditions contravenes Part 1 section 7 of the Food and Drugs Law, which states:

“Any person who sells, prepares, packages, conveys, stores or displays for sale any food under insanitary conditions commits an offence.”

Results of Laboratory (Microbiological) Analysis of the Chicken parts also indicate heavy contamination by bacteria such as E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Thermotolerant Coliforms.

The heavy presence of these micro-organisms renders the chicken parts unwholesome for human consumption.

The whole consignment of chicken parts, averaging about One Thousand (1000) cartons has been confiscated by the Food and Drugs Board for safe disposal, to prevent its entry into the Food Chain.

The Food and Drugs Board will continue its monitoring of the operations of all Bulk Cold Storage Facilities to ensure that they adhere strictly to Good Cold Storage Practices.

Furthermore, the Food and Drugs Board wishes to assure the public that it will continue to do all in its power to protect public health and safety.
