Food as Medicine

324 Views Posted on 15-Apr-2010 under Features

Food is medicine while medicines are supposed to be therapies for remedying our ailments. They were originally made to be joyfully taken on the dining table with a great sense of joy and appetite.

Unfortunately, we now eat all the hefty modern junks and call on the poor medical counter’s door for help. He has no choice but to pack for us all the synthetic chemicals in the name of medicines and sometimes out-dated ones which we gladly celebrate as a measure to curbing our self triggered infections most of which are very preventable if we had lived according to standard natural medical etiquettes.

The very dawns of modern health care began soon after the English Physician and Anatomist William Harvey discovered the true pattern of blood circulation in the body in 1628 followed by the Italian Anatomist Marcello Malpighi who also came up to advance it with the theory on the tinny vessels called capillaries which was said to aid the circulation by channeling the blood through the body. Further searches led to extensive findings that gradually coiled off the science of preventive medicine.

And as established by the Austrian-born U.S. educator and researcher, who lived between 1926 and 2002, he stated and I quote “Effective health care depends on self care...The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care but it also trains the patient-to-be to function...as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a life-long patient.”-Medical Nemesis.

It is therefore clear to understand that people of this age are so much self psyched in exaggerated power of the pill for health. In other words as long as we live on this present planet most of us are programmed into surviving by saving the pennies of our long toils gains in visiting the hospitals for the treatment of many preventable ailments while most aged men and women of this day as well as few other recorded young people unfortunately find themselves painfully battling diseases like kidney infections, arteriosclerosis, various cancers and other related cardiovascular diseases which mostly are linked to our choice of diet.

Increasing depletion of preventive medicine has therefore resulted in a total reliance on physician’s prescriptive sheet as a chit for survival over the years. While it is said necessity is a mother of invention, this fostered attitude of drug dependency and patients crave for medicines as a life support soon gave birth to the invention of placebos as a modern medical necessity.

Placebos are an inert substance containing no element of medicine but used in place of active drug prescribed by physicians. Though it has no direct physical effect on one’s health condition, it is prescribed because most sick people have grown to believe “heart and soul” in the comfort of drug administration as a source of treatment and cure for diseases. Placebos are therefore drug-like substances offered to patients with incurable illness in order to induce the placebo effect.

Studies conducted by the American anesthesiologist Henry Knowles Beecher in 1955 showed that in the condition of 1000 patients tested, more than 35 percent of them were found to have been improved by administering placebos. Though little is known as to how this effect works, one theory is that the patient's faith in a cure may be related to the release of brain chemicals called endorphins, the body's natural opiate but could however fail when hopes are raised too high.

Nevertheless, the famous Grecian physician Hippocrates believed to be the father of medicine said the food we eat is medicine to us life and as its been heard over and over again for years the famous proverb that says “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away but besides keeping him away”. We  are probably consciously helping all the many good-hearted physicians achieve their aim of bringing good health and relieve to humanity which they owe to their clarion call to medical duty in saving life.

In simpler terms, preventive healthcare is a personal responsibility of every human being to eat and drink cautiously just what is capable to promote a 100 percent good health while maintaining good physical body frame in terms of exercise and guarding against all habits that rips the body of its natural health.

Besides, while it is obvious that mortal men lives to wear down at a point in time, the body under the right conditions has a way of replenishing and keeping itself healthy while eating protective foods that contain all the wonderful un-synthesized nutrients and vitamins to boost the  natural immunity of repairing all breakdowns.

It is also essential to note that though we do not condemn those on medical drugs, it is important to note that the level of toxicity to the system in the name of side effects are equally studied and communicated to patients before prescription is done while naturopathic medicines would have been more considerable till patient recovers to follow personal preventive medical health-care.

People are also cautioned to avoid activities that prevent the free harmonious co-ordination of the brain since it is the body’s centre of operation and has a great power in the restoration of health through a system called the Human Psycho-Healing Mechanism. This mainly works while a patient positive psyche puts the body in a shape to effectively undergo its natural activities while good moods is a great measure for the body to grow and function well and also a great remedy for infection like Hepatitis B infection which affect the liver as further research are being experimented to advance this measure.

Dr. John Hagelin, PhD, A.B., M.A., Quantum Physicist also emphatically affirms on positive lifestyle apart from pills as a great way of living strong and fit. He says using our very bodies as the tools; “It is important to know that our body is the product of our thoughts. Medical science knows that the nature of thoughts and emotions actually determine the physical substance and structure and functions of our body. Literally, parts of our body are replaced every day, others take months, some years. Eventually, in a few years, we have a brand new physical body.

Thoughts and emotions are continuously reassembling, reorganizing, and recreating our body.

Happy thoughts lead to a happier biochemistry which means a healthier body. Negative thoughts, stress, etc. have been shown to degrade the body and the functions of the brain.”

Stress should also be curbed in a good way possible since it readily interferes with the body’s ability to fight infection since the immunity level gradually falls back and cold leaving the system prone to all manner of infections.

At this beautiful juncture, we might all be wondering what special food our subject references but it’s undeniable that nature really does provide natural man with natural life foods even from day one of creation and further approved and affirmed by scientific researches around the globe.

“Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetable constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator…They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigour of intellect, that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet”.–Ellen G. White (1827-1915)

With the above quotation, it is clear what people need to eat to fix and continually put the body in shape. As most times referred to as Protective foods, plant foods have very unique feature that makes them the most viable food source for human consumption.

Why natural foods should fill your “Kitchened Pharmacy”

After various scientific research conducted by American Scientists as well as other diet oriented researchers from Japan and the other scientific worlds, the United States Surgeon General’s report in 1988 on nutrition and health urged Americans to reduce their intakes of animal fats, such as those found in meat and dairy products, and to increase consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

While detailed findings proves these plant diets to posses special features that enhances, improves and promotes good health humans and animals alike. It is shown that diets rich in vitamin antioxidants thus Vitamin C and E, and the carotenoids are endowed with a lower risk of coronary heart disease and cancer hence people who eat this foods  have extremely negligible rate of ever acquiring this diseases.

Also fruits and vegetables, whole grain, nuts and seeds, legumes and the various herbs in the likes of the onion, garlic, rosemary, basil, cilantro, oregano, thyme, cumin, dill, turmeric and tarragon are well composed of a number of phytochemicals that are important in both health promotion and disease prevention. They may also act as anti oxidant stimulating the immune system, inducing protective enzymes in the liver and also the blocking of damage to genetic materials.

Citrus fruits, vegetable of the cabbage family and the carrot family, and the yellow-orange coloured fruits and orange are especially well known to be rich in certain photochemical that protect us from the various risks of cancer.

More so, soybeans are unique in their content of isoflavours such as genestein, which has the ability to inhibit blood clot, lower cholesterol levels, and inhibit the development of prostate and breast cancer in our system. Fruits like lemon are rich in potassium and thereby help lower blood pressure levels and substantially reduce the risk of stroke.

And then nuts, legumes, fruits and grains like the oatmeal and generally plant based diets are reported to lower blood a cholesterol level which prevents the risk of coronary heart disease.

Besides, according to Modern Medical Counselor, Page 117 has it that “Protein from flesh food, however, putrefies the more readily than protein from vegetable sources. One reason why this happens in many cases is that putrefactive bacteria may be may be found in flesh as well as in the intestine”

Furthermore, as established by renowned Ghanaian Researcher, Apostle E.H. Agbalenyoh, in an article published in the Gye Nyame Concord December 9, 2009, he states that; “The world has been plagued recently with meat-based diseases that continuously disturb flesh-based diet eaters. The mad cow, Chicken and Swine diseases have printed questions on the faces of those who patronize the meat industry. In fact, many meat based diet consumers have since the advent of the flesh based that shifted the allegiance from meat consumption to plant based diet.

It is therefore unanimously clear to note that plant based diets are a great avenue to maintaining good health, avoiding many diseases and means to feed with great appetite while healing yourself with just what you eat in contributing to the totalitarian well being of humanity.
